14 Mar Besiktas v Bayern Munich – story of the match
Bayern Munich coasted into the quarter-finals of the Champions League with a 3-1 win over Besiktas in Istanbul for an 8-1 aggregate victory.
Leading 5-0 from the first leg in Germany there was little chance of an upset for the Turkish club and an early goal from Thiago Alcantara ensured the hosts’ hopes were extinguished.
After the break a calamitous mix-up between Gokhan Gonul and Tolga Zengin resulted in the defender turning the ball into his own net and after a Vagner Love consolation following some lax Bayern defending substitute Sandro Wagner completed a routine victory six minutes from time.
It extended coach Jupp Heynckes’ record to just one defeat in 28 matches and took Bayern’s tally in this season’s competition to 21.
What they said
Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes: “Managers think differently than the media. It turns out I had a record of scoring in successive home games but I only learned about it when (Robert) Lewandowski came close breaking it. For me, it’s about playing good football, seeing my team improve and offering a good spectacle.”
Besiktas coach Senol Gunes: “We lost today, but we were not beaten in terms of the game play. My players fought hard but they could have been more careful. We do not want to boast about our unbeaten group run and do not want to dwell on this elimination. We want to keep on being on this stage next year.”

Star man – Thomas Muller
Muller’s delivery from out wide created Bayern’s opener and with his clever running and ability to find space Besiktas never got to grips with him.
Highlight of the match
The defensive mix-up which led to Bayern’s second was pure comedy. Right-back Rafinha’s cross was missed by lunging Necip Uysal, who succeeded only in confusing the Gonul and goalkeeper Zengin with the ball ending up in the back of the net off the backtracking defender.
Bayern coach Heynckes is the first in ChampionsLeague history to win 11 consecutive matches with the victory in Istanbul securing a seventh successive quarter-final for the Bundesliga club.
