“It is the 10th June 1998.
I am rooming with my mate Billy McKinlay in preparation for Scotland’s opening match at the World Cup in France. The manager Craig Brown called Billy to go to his room for a chat. Billy had been told the week before that he was playing from the start in the game against Brazil.
I was really excited for him and when he came back to the room, I asked him what Craig wanted to speak to him about. Billy looked gutted and when he told me that he wasn’t playing, I was amazed.
“That is shocking, who does he have playing in your place.” I asked.
“Fucking you!” said Billy.
I had mixed emotions, but ‘Badger’ was delighted for me, despite his own disappointment.
That day, I stood in the tunnel, directly opposite the World’s best player Ronaldo. It was surreal, but made me feel very proud to be representing my country at a World Cup and to be rubbing shoulders with the best players in the world. The rest as they say is history.”Back to The Football Family

It’s the Scottish League Cup Final Aberdeen v Inverness Caledonian Thistle. It’s probably the worst final of all time with the game tied at 0-0. The longer it goes on, the more I am dreading the thought of making a mistake. Aaron Doran has a free kick and I am thinking please don’t stick this […]
