“It is the 10th June 1998.

I am rooming with my mate Billy McKinlay in preparation for Scotland’s opening match at the World Cup in France. The manager Craig Brown called Billy to go to his room for a chat. Billy had been told the week before that he was playing from the start in the game against Brazil.

I was really excited for him and when he came back to the room, I asked him what Craig wanted to speak to him about. Billy looked gutted and when he told me that he wasn’t playing, I was amazed.

“That is shocking, who does he have playing in your place.” I asked.

“Fucking you!” said Billy.

I had mixed emotions, but ‘Badger’ was delighted for me, despite his own disappointment.

That day, I stood in the tunnel, directly opposite the World’s best player Ronaldo. It was surreal, but made me feel very proud to be representing my country at a World Cup and to be rubbing shoulders with the best players in the world. The rest as they say is history.”
