I remember my mate Steven Bell at Dundee United, I shared a room with him for a year. Sadly, he was released by United and then one year later, I suffered the same fate.
We didn’t really keep in touch after we moved on but, I still considered him a friend.
He moved to Stirling Albion and I signed for Airdrie.
A couple of years passed and we ended up playing each other in the play-off final. Stirling were the league below and we finished second bottom of the First division, so the battle for division one status in 2007 was at stake.
We drew 2-2 in the first leg at Stirling and the return leg turned out to be a five goal thriller and a nightmare for me!
We were 2-1 behind and trying to get an equaliser. Belly (Steven Bell) ran off me for the winner in the second leg to make it 3-1. I never picked up his run and he crossed for Stewart Devine to volley home to make it 3-1.
I was so devastated, Kenny Black had to take me off the park. Despite the fact we pulled a goal back to make it 3-2, I was doubled over on my knees gutted at my mistake which led to their goal.
To be fair to Steven, he is one of my best mates now, but never mentions the game or the fact that he ran away from me to create the winner. He always has it in his locker,
incase I start digging him up or slagging him about football.
As for me, I was so gutted about that day, the mistake and the fact we were relegated.
However, I managed to get over it by flying out with my mates to Magaluf on the Monday!Back to The Football Family

It’s 2002 Hampden Park, the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. My two brothers John and Paul are with me at the game and we are so excited about the match. This was a Madrid side that contained Raul, Roberto Carlos, Zidane, Steven McManaman, Claude Makélélé and Luis Figo, all right here […]
It’s the Scottish League Cup Final Aberdeen v Inverness Caledonian Thistle. It’s probably the worst final of all time with the game tied at 0-0. The longer it goes on, the more I am dreading the thought of making a mistake. Aaron Doran has a free kick and I am thinking please don’t stick this […]

At boardrooms up and down the country, there are no shortage of very famous people walking in the door and without sounding blasé, […]
