“One of my best friends is a guy called Andy Milne. I am managing St Mirren and we were in a battle to avoid relegation with Dunfermline. We had just lost to the ‘Pars’ and the gap between us at the bottom was four points in our favour with two away games ahead against Dundee United and Motherwell. We are desperate, so Andy decides to come out of retirement and play at 40+ years old. We were that desperate!

He plays as a holding midfielder at Tannadice and we win 2-0. We decide to keep the same team against Maurice Malpas’ Motherwell side.

We are 2-0 down after 54 minutes and Andy has also given away a penalty, so I decide to take my best mate off, as he’s having a stinker and throw on Billy Mehmet and John Sutton for Alex Burke. Sutton heads in his first goal, two minutes after coming on, and Billy Mehmet hits the equaliser just before the hour.

There’s only six minutes left, we have a free kick on the left side about 20 yards from goal. The ball is floated in and eventually drops to John Sutton on the edge of the box. The young striker lashes the ball into the roof of the net to win the game for us by 3-2.

An inspired substitution and we avoid relegation. Andy is not happy about being subbed or the penalty decision to this day, but we are still good friends and laugh about it. That is what football is all about. Friendships and memories.”
