“I am fourteen years old on an ‘S’ form signing with Aberdeen. Sir Alex Ferguson calls me and asks if I can play in a reserve fixture at Cowdenbeath. To say I was excited was an understatement! I was registered as a trialist and made my way to the dressing room to meet what I expected to be reserve team players.

When I opened the door, Miller, McLeish, Strachan and McGhee were all there with the rest of the first team players. They had drawn with St Mirren 2-2 at the weekend, and as a punishment, he made them all play in this reserve match.

I played up front with Eric Black and scored the winner in a 1-0 victory. Fergie offered me a full time contract, but had to wait a while, as he didn’t realise I was still at school and couldn’t sign for them. It wouldn’t be the last time I encountered the genius and the madness of Sir Alex!”
