It was a night I will never forget at Pittodrie.
A place in the last 32 of the Uefa cup is at stake against FC Copenhagen. The Danes needed a point, we had to win.
Jimmy Calderwood and Jimmy Nicholl were the perfect combination as manager and assistant. Their banter was top class, but when they were serious, we were focussed.
The first half belonged to the Danes, but it was still 0-0. The second half we came out of the traps flying and Jamie Smith put us ahead after 47 minutes and added a second soon after.
The whole place was bouncing and I am claiming the third as my cross was deflected into the net to make it 3-0. The fourth was scored by Ricky Foster to seal our win and set us up in the next round against Bayern Munich.
The dressing room afterwards was mayhem, you’d think we had just won the Champions League!
I swapped my shirt with a Copenhagen player, not the guy who was marking me, because I had battered him for the entire 90 minutes and I am not so sure he would have been happy to exchange anything else with me at the end of the game.Back to The Football Family

It’s 2002 Hampden Park, the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen. My two brothers John and Paul are with me at the game and we are so excited about the match. This was a Madrid side that contained Raul, Roberto Carlos, Zidane, Steven McManaman, Claude Makélélé and Luis Figo, all right here […]
It’s the Scottish League Cup Final Aberdeen v Inverness Caledonian Thistle. It’s probably the worst final of all time with the game tied at 0-0. The longer it goes on, the more I am dreading the thought of making a mistake. Aaron Doran has a free kick and I am thinking please don’t stick this […]
Having worked in the media and in football clubs as a Chief executive, you get the chance to meet many special people, some famous, some who just love football and their club. At boardrooms up and down the country, there are no shortage of very famous people walking in the door and without sounding blasé, […]
