“As a football writer, there’s nothing better than getting the chance to play football at one of the most famous stadiums in the world, Wembley. The Scottish Football Writers’ association v the ‘Auld enemy’ England.
The preparation for this game probably the total opposite of the professionals we write about, day in, day out. We had a mix of old professionals and ‘hacks’ in our side and the best of them was former Morton centre-half Jim Duffy at the back. He absolutely controlled our back line to limit any threat from our english counterparts.
We won the match, but the abiding memory is of journalist and broadcaster Chick Young sitting on the ball at one point, as if he was Jim Baxter in 1967. Chico had that ‘devil may care’ streak, but he was no slim Jim! However, the wee man’s cheek stays with me.”Back to The Football Family
