Tommy Wright still looking up but knows St Johnstone have it all to do

Tommy Wright has admitted that St Johnstone’s top-six aspirations are all but over following Wednesday’s defeat to Kilmarnock.

Wright has maintained all season that his side were on course to secure a place in the top six for the seventh season in a row, but slipped to nine points off Hearts after the 2-0 defeat.

It means Saints are now closer to the bottom two – they have 30 points to Partick Thistle’s 24 – than they are to the top six, and Wright conceded the defeat at Rugby Park meant and end to their ambitions.

“Yeah I think so, even though we have two games in hand on Hearts,” the Perth boss said.

“If we had won last night it could have been game on for us, and we talked about it all week, because it could have been game on in terms of putting the squeeze on teams above.”

Although refusing to accept that his side were in the midst of a relegation scrap – their current form of one win in nine suggests they are in danger of being dragged in – Wright knows his side are under pressure for the first time in his time at McDiarmid Park.

“Everything is up for grabs,” he said. “Partick Thistle are probably thinking they can catch us, and Ross County probably think it as well, but ourselves and Dundee think we can catch Motherwell.

“It’s tight but I’d rather be in our position than teams below us, and we all have to play each other.

“There are enough games and enough points left for us to pull ourselves away from us and hopefully try and get up one place, (but) two places might be too difficult.”

Saints make the short trip to Dundee on Saturday knowing that another defeat could see them slip another place in the table, but Wright is not looking over his shoulder just yet and prefers to concentrate on hunting down Motherwell in seventh.

He said: “I can’t let psyche come into play.

“I have to make sure that we keep positive and try to get the players to remain positive. That’s my job.

“I am still very much trying to look up the table rather than below us.”
