Can Manchester United reign in Spain once again?

Manchester United face Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg, the first-ever competitive meeting between the clubs.

United have lost only one of their previous eight matches in Spain, and here, Press Association Sport looks at those encounters.

The most memorable moment from this Champions League group stage opener was a 19-year-old Wayne Rooney being sent off, referee Kim Milton Nielsen showing the forward a second yellow card when he sarcastically applauded the official’s decision to book him for a tackle. Sr Alex Ferguson’s United would go on to finish bottom the pool.

A fine Champions League semi-final first-leg result for United could have been even better, with Cristiano Ronaldo having missed an early penalty at the Nou Camp. They subsequently won the second leg 1-0 before famously overcoming Chelsea in the final in Moscow.

Both clubs secured qualification from the Champions League group stage with what was a fourth successive goalless draw between them, which saw the hosts reduced to 10 men late on when Joan Capdevila was sent off for a challenge on Ronaldo. United would end up as runners-up, losing the final to Barcelona.

The run of 0-0 draws for United in Spain was broken in this Champions League group stage game as Javier Hernandez netted an 85th-minute winner, eight minutes after coming off the bench.

United crashed out of the Europa League in the last 16, with Marcelo Bielsa’s Athletic adding to a 3-2 victory at Old Trafford to triumph 5-3 on aggregate. Fernando Llorente and Oscar de Marcos scored either side of the interval before Rooney’s late reply.

Things looked promising for United at the end of a Champions League last-16 first leg that had seen Danny Welbeck open the scoring at the Bernabeu and Ronaldo equalise against his old side. But the Red Devils were then eliminated following a 2-1 second-leg loss at Old Trafford, which would prove the club’s last European game under Ferguson.

Marcus Rashford’s fine second-half free-kick steered Jose Mourinho’s United to victory in this Europa League semi-final first leg. The second leg finished 1-1 and United then beat Ajax in the final.
