Barcelona’s attempt to defender their superstar, Lionel Messi, has backfired after Spanish tax authorities criticised their campaign.

The La Liga champions urged fans across the world to show support for Messi using the hashtag #WeAreAllLeoMessi, after he was found guilty of tax evasion in a Spanish court last week.

Not surprisingly the Spanish tax authorities didn’t take the campaign well and president of the Spanish tax inspectors union, Gestha, Carlos Cruzado said,

“Our view is that a campaign of solidarity, such as the one being run at the moment by Barcelona, in support of people who have defrauded the public purse isn’t something that exactly improves the tax conscience of Spaniards,”

While many football fans were also unsympathetic towards the Ballon D’or winner, even creating a rival hashtag campaign.
