Betfred set to sponsor SPFL

Last updated: April 29, 2015 10:28

Sports betting firm Betfred is set to be announced as the sponsor to back the SPFL in a “multi-million pound” deal next season, according to the Scottish Sun.

The betting company and the football league’s governing body have reportedly been in talks over a possible link-up for months and hope to have deal hammered out by the start of the new campaign.

The league has been without a sponsor since Clydesdale Bank ended its association with Scottish football in 2013.

Snooker and darts promoter Barry Hearn gave a damning indictment of the way the game was being promoted at the end of last year but now it is Betfred – who sponsor Hearn’s World Snooker Championship – who are keen to become involved in the Scottish game.

On Tuesday, the SPFL’s commercial director Scott Steedman said “there’s no way” the league would be without a sponsor next term.
