Celtic to appeal Van Dijk red card

Last updated: March 09, 2015 16:29

Celtic have confirmed they intend to appeal Virgil van Dijk’s red card after the defender was sent off in the Scottish Cup quarter-final 1-1 draw against Dundee United.

Van Dijk was dismissed after tangling with Calum Butcher. The Dutchman was adjudged to have stamped on the player and was sent off for violent conduct by referee Craig Thomson.

The punishment is an immediate one-match ban plus a further suspension in the Scottish Cup, meaning he would miss the Scottish League Cup final and the replay, should Celtic be unsuccessful in their appeal.

However, The Hoops hope to overturn the ban and will find out if they are successful at a Judicial Panel hearing on Thursday.

Dundee United have also confirmed they will appeal Paul Paton’s red card but they will not contest Paul Dixon’s sending off.

Sunday’s game is the first of four meetings between the two sides over a two-week period.
