Ciftci will have to keep his cool, says McNamara

Dundee United boss Jackie McNamara believes Turkish striker Nadir Ciftci will have to keep his cool in the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay against Celtic.

Ciftci was handed a notice of complaint by the SFA’s compliance officer after he was adjudged to have kicked out at Scott Brown following his challenge in the 1-1 draw at Tannadice on March 8.

The charge of violent conduct was “Not Proven” meaning he will be able to play in the replay on Wednesday but McNamara has reason to believe the 23-year-old was “possibly targeted” in the quarter-final and will speak to him about the importance of keeping his discipline.

“I’m not concerned [that he’ll be singled out] but I’ve been speaking to him about keeping cool and seeing it as a compliment because he’s a big player,” McNamara told STV.

“They possibly targeted him in that game for special treatment but he has to keep cool. He has to make sure he’s doing it in the right way and putting the ball in the net. That’s his job.

“Of course [I’ll speak to him] and all the players about the importance of keeping discipline. Not just in terms of a tackle but also our shape, positioning, focus and concentration. Those things are key if we’re to get the result.”
