Dundee United have announced they have submitted an appeal for Paul Paton’s red card against Celtic.

Paton was wrongly dismissed in the Scottish Cup quarter-final against the Hoops at Tannadice after being mistakenly identified as Calum Butcher.

Butcher reacted to Virgil van Dijk’s stamp but, after conferring with his linesman Graham Chambers, referee Craig Thomson sent off Paton instead.

Paton will be able to play in the League Cup final after his hearing from the Judicial Panel on Thursday.

United have confirmed that they haven’t contested Paul Dixon’s dismissal after the defender was sent off after blocking Leigh Griffiths’ goal-bound shot with his arm.

Dixon won’t be able to play in the replay at Celtic Park on March 18.
