At 3-0 down at half-time in the Champions League final, Milan’s name was already being etched onto the trophy thanks to a double from Hernan Crespo and Paulo Maldini. But Steven Gerrard led by example and breathed life into the reds with a terrific header. Further goals from Smicer and Xabi Alondo forced the game into extra time and penalties, with Shevckenko missing the decisive spot kick for Milan.
