Hibs can beat Rangers, insists Stubbs

Alan Stubbs believes Hibernian can narrow the gap on Rangers with a victory against the Ibrox men on Sunday.

Hibs trail the Scottish Championship leaders by eight points but have won seven of their last eight league games to keep the pressure up on the Light Blues.

Ex-pros and pundits believe it’s an encounter that the Leith outfit can ill-afford to lose but Stubbs says he’s confident they can grab three points.

“The most important thing for me is I’ve got confidence that this group of players can go out on Sunday at home in front of a big crowd that are going to roar us on and get a result,” he told PLZ Soccer.

“We have to perform. We can’t let the occasion affect our performance in any way.

“We have to thrive on the atmosphere. We’ll stick our chests out and try to be ready for what Rangers try to do to us.

“But they need to be ready for what we’re going to try to do them. It’s not all about one team even though sometimes it can look that way. We’re going to play a huge part on Sunday.

“They’ve certainly got strengths, we know that, but we feel we have players who can hurt them in areas too.”

Stubbs added that a defeat to the Gers wouldn’t mean an insurmountable task in turning around an 11-point deficit.

“It certainly doesn’t make the job easier,” he said.

“I think this time last season we were quite a few points behind Rangers and we clawed it back and went ahead of them so it can be done.

“It’s not the way I want to do it but it can be done. But we’re not thinking about anything other than a victory on Sunday.”

Hibs captain David Gray believes it’s a must-win game on Sunday.

“Every game is massive for Hibs at the minute as we’re playing catch-up to Rangers.

“Our aim is to get promotion so we’ve got try to cut the gap on Rangers on Sunday and we’ve got a good opportunity to do that.

“There’s the added attention to the big game and I do get excited but at the same time it’s just another game that we need to make sure we prepare properly for.

“I don’t think there’s extra responsibility being the captain because every game, especially with us playing catch-up, is a must-win game.”
