11 Feb Kane: It’s crazy the derby only finished 1-0
Harry Kane said it was “crazy” Tottenham were unable to score more goals during their dominant win over Arsenal on Saturday.
But the striker, whose second-half header proved the difference at Wembley, hailed Spurs’ excellent run of form, which has seen them take seven points from their last three games against Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United.
Tottenham allowed the Gunners a sniff of a draw after missing a number of golden chances, with Kane, Erik Lamela, Dele Alli and Kieran Trippier all guilty in front of goal.
Alexandre Lacazette could have made them pay late on but he squandered two excellent opportunities of his own as Spurs held on for a deserved victory.
“It was a great game, we really played well, especially second half we had plenty of chances after we went 1-0 up,” Kane told Spurs TV.
“It’s crazy it finished 1-0 but we’ll take it. In these big games you just need that first goal and the spaces open up and you get more chances.
“That’s what happened, we should have been more clinical, we know that, but we played very well. We kept them quiet until the last five minutes when they piled on the pressure. But overall it was a good day.”
Kane’s goal was his seventh in eight meetings against Arsenal and means Tottenham move seven points clear of their rivals with 11 games left to play.
It has been a testing period for Spurs, who have also had an FA Cup double with Newport to negotiate, ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg against Juventus in Turin.
“It’s massive, it’s a big stage in our season and we’ve come out in flying colours,” Kane said.
“We’ve got good momentum, the Champions League coming up, which we’re looking forward to, then we’ve got to keep it going in the league.”
For Arsenal, this was their sixth away game without a win and third straight defeat on the road.
Arsene Wenger’s side were competitive in the first half, and looked dangerous on the counter-attack, but they were second best after the interval.
“The game was there in the first half, they were a bit cagey and we defended well,” Wilshere told the official club website.
“We got down on the counter-attack a few times in the first half and we looked like we could have really hurt them, but then we had our final ball where we rushed it and the chance was gone.
“We’ll look back and take some positives, but at the end of the day it was a big game for us and we lost. We’re not happy.”
