Brighton have completed the signing of goalkeeper Jason Steele from Sunderland.

The 27-year-old, who was relegated to Sky Bet League One with the Black Cats last season, has signed a three-year deal with the Premier League Seagulls.

He will provide back-up to Albion number one Mat Ryan at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton boss Chris Hughton told the club’s website: “We’re delighted to secure the services of Jason, a goalkeeper that brings a wealth of experience, having played almost 300 games at senior level.”

Steele, who made 15 Championship appearances on Wearside, has also played for Middlesbrough, Northampton and Blackburn.

He arrives on the south coast following the departure of back-up goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa.

Experienced Finn Maenpaa rejected the offer of a new deal and will officially become a free agent on June 30, while Brighton remain in talks about extending the contract of fellow keeper Tim Krul.

“Mat Ryan performed exceptionally well for us in the Premier League last season and Jason’s arrival will, following Niki Maenpaa’s departure, restore the options we have in this position,” added Hughton.

“Jason will work with Ben Roberts (goalkeeping coach) and our other goalkeepers and I’m looking forward to welcoming him to the squad when we return for pre-season training.”
