Leroy Sane expects to become a better player under Pep Guardiola after completing his £37million transfer to Manchester City.
The highly-rated Germany winger has signed a five-year deal at the Etihad Stadium after a much-anticipated move from Schalke.
The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the most exciting young prospects in the European game and he hopes linking up with City’s new boss Guardiola will help him realise his potential.
Sane told the club’s website, www.mancity.com: “I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern (Munich) where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players and brought them on. That was a big part of my decision to come here.
“He will bring me a long way in terms of tactics and I think he can help any player develop technically. I think he can make me a more complete player.
“The coach convinced me it’s a very good club and I can continue to progress. I know there is a very good coach here and I will learn a lot.
“I am glad it has all finally worked out for the best. Now I’m here and I can take the next step in my career.”
Sane has made rapid progress since his professional bow in April 2014 and highlights include scoring in a Schalke win at Real Madrid. He made 42 appearances for the club last season, scoring nine goals. He also broke into the Germany national side and was a member of their squad at Euro 2016.
Guardiola said: “He is a special talent and an exciting player that I think our supporters will enjoy watching.
“He has great technical ability, is comfortable on the ball and there is much to admire about the way he plays football. He is fast, enjoys creating chances for others, works hard for the team and scores goals, too. He also has a very positive attitude and will fit in well with our squad.”
Sane, who could get a run-out in a friendly against Arsenal in Gothenburg on Sunday, hopes to get off to a good start at his new club.
He said: “I think I will need a bit of time to start with – of course it’s another league and there’s a different style of play, (but) I think I can adapt very quickly.”
Sane’s arrival continues new manager Guardiola’s rebuilding of the City squad following the signings of Nolito, Ilkay Gundogan and Oleksandr Zinchenko this summer.
Other new signings could follow with Guardiola having admitted an interest in Everton defender John Stones and the club having been linked with Palmeiras forward Gabriel Jesus.
Schalke have expressed their sadness at losing Sane, who came through the club’s youth system after first joining them 11 years ago and returned after a brief stint at Bayer Leverkusen.
The club’s director of sport Christian Heidel told the club’s website, www.schalke04.de: “We have given the green light to the transfer because the necessary financial conditions we demanded to give our consent were met.
“But our hearts are bleeding a little. In Leroy we are losing a great footballer with a good character to whom Schalke owe a lot.
“The team and the club wish him all the good imaginable for his new challenge.”
