The medals of football legend Trevor Francis are being sold by his family for a total of £70,000. The collection includes two European Cup winner’s medals, England caps and shirts as well as a jersey which belonged to Diego Maradona.
Francis was the first million pound football player when he made the move from Birmingham City to Nottingham Forrest in 1979.
Months later he scored the winner as Brian Clough’s side beat Malmo 1-0 in the 1979 European Cup final. His medal from the game in Munich is the marquee lot in the collection and could reach £20,000 alone.
Forrest repeated their triumph from the year previous, although, Francis missed the game due to an injury but was still able to pick up a winners medal which today, is worth around £8,500.
He later played for Italian side Sampdoria in the 1980s and his Coppa Italia 1984-85 winner’s medal could reach £3,500. During that season his side played against none other than Diego Maradona, who was with Napoli. At the end of one game the pair swapped shirts and Francis kept hold of the famous number 10’s top, which is valued at £3,500.
For his country, Francis wore the red number eight away England shirt at the 1982 FIFA World Cup, said to also be worth around £3,500.
Finally, He won the League Cup with Sheffield Wednesday in 1991, beating Manchester United in the final. His winner’s medal is set to make £1,400.
The auction takes place in Exmouth, Devon, next month.
