03 Nov Griffiths key to Scotland victory – Ferguson
Former Scotland captain Barry Ferguson believes Gordon Strachan’s side can beat England in next weeks World Cup Qualifier, as long as Leigh Griffiths leads the line for the national side.
Scotland’s striking dilemma has been a big talking point ahead of the England clash, and Barry Ferguson thinks that the Celtic striker is the man to score the goals at Wembley.
“For me up front you’ve got to go with somebody that scores goals and that’s Leigh Griffiths. I know he’s not started many games for Scotland but he’s a danger man. You give him a chance and he’s going to score.
Ferguson, who played the last time Scotland beat England back in 1999, says the players must believe they can come away from Wembley with three points.
“Being realistic, we can go down there and get a win. I know it’s been disappointing the past few games, but we’ve got to go down with the mentality we can beat them.
If we can get people like Scott Brown and Darren Fletcher to get in people’s ears and say ‘listen, we can do this’ then there’s no doubt we can go down and get a win. Let’s get down and be positive and hopefully come away with a win”.
Scott Brown came out of international retirement in the lead up to to Scotland’s crunch clash against the Auld Enemy, and former Rangers man Ferguson believes he will play a vital role in the match.
“I can understand why Gordon Strachan is wanting him in the team. For me he’s been the best player this season in Scotland. Last season he’ll admit himself it wasn’t his best season, but that was hampered with a few injuries and maybe coming back too quick.
This season he looks to be a different animal under Brendan Rodgers. We need all our best players when we go down to play at Wembley and certainly Scott Brown is one of the best players”.
Ferguson says that despite the quality England have at their disposal, Scotland’s team mentality could be the key to victory.
“The big thing for us is that we’ve got a lot of heart, it’s a good Scottish trait.
We’re a team not filled with world class players, but a lot of good players.
Everybody knows they’ve got world class players, but I don’t think they play well as a team, I think they’re full of individuals.
The Tartan Army will sing from the first minute to the last and I’m sure they’ll be a big help”.
