Substitute Dominique Malonga struck with almost the last kick of the ball to send Hibs level with Rangers in the Championship title race after a 1-0 win over Queen of the South.
It looked as though it would be a frustrating day for the Hibees after Rangers slipped up against Falkirk in the early kick off and Alan Stubbs’ men failing to take advantage.
But that was until Malonga popped up with a vital downward header in the fourth minute of injury time to send the home supporters into raptures.
The top two now meet for a mouth-watering clash at Ibrox on December 28 with the momentum firmly behind Hibs who have closed an eight-point gap to Rangers over a matter of weeks.
“I thought like it was one of those games where we were on the periphery of doing something,” admitted Stubbs. PLayers have off days I think a couple had one today but it’s no big deal.
“We’re there now and we won’t go away I think people will start to believe us.”
The bounce ball which led to Hibs breakaway and goal rankled with Queens boss James Fowler. “Having seen the footage it looks like he drops the ball in Liam Fontaine’s path to restart the game,” he said.
“I’ve seen that happen before when a team is in possession but Millar was chasing Fyvie down in the corner. They break away and we can’t get Kyle Hutton back on the pitch and we lose the goal.”
