Celtic full-back Emilio Izaguirre has apologised after he was sent off against Ajax.
The Hoops were in control and leading 2-1 against the Dutch before the Honduran was dismissed by referee Luca Banti for a second bookable offence.
Ajax salvaged a point from the Europa League group opener as Celtic were unable to hold out with 10 men and Izaguirre admits he let the team down.
“I am very disappointed with my red card. I need to take responsibility for the dropped points.
“Of course I was worried I had let the team down by leaving them with 10 men. I said sorry to the boys. It was a big game and we needed to keep 11 players on the field.
“They accepted my apology and were fine with me. These things happen so I need to be focused and 100 per cent fit for coming games.
“The first yellow was hard because I touched the ball first and stopped the pass but the second I caught their guy. Now I must keep my head up and work hard for the team.”
Ajax’s equaliser came from a set piece – Celtic’s Achilies at this moment in time – and goalkeeper Craig Gordon feels the Hoops were unlucky.
“I just tried to spread myself to cover every angle but everyone missed it and the ball went in at the back post,” he said.
“When you get a ball as good as that you spread yourself, make yourself as big as possible and hope it hits you.
“You just look for that wee bit of luck but it didn’t happen on this occasion and it went into the back of the net.”
