14 Nov Messi rejects Barca contract
Lionel Messi’s Barcelona future could be in doubt after reports from Spanish newspaper Marca say he rejected a new deal at his current club.
The Argentinian international was offered an extension on his contract, which currently expires in 2018, and should Barcelona not manage to tie their star man down they will have a big decision to make.
The Spanish sports newspaper believe that Messi notified his club in the summer that he wishes to get to the end of his current deal before deciding on his future.
They stated that one of the main reasons for Messi’s uncertainty is to do with the tax problems he has faced in Spain recently.
The all-time La Liga top goalscorer was sentenced to 21 months in jail earlier this year for a tax evasion scheme involving himself and his father, and a move away from the country may help him put that scandal behind him.
Should be opt to run down his contract, the club would be left to work out whether selling him on before the end of his deal would be more beneficial to them.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner already has 16 goals to his name this season, and has struck up a great relationship with fellow forwards Luis Suarez and Neymar in recent seasons. Barcelona currently sit second in the league table behind Real Madrid.
