Mixu Paatelainen remains confident that Dundee United can keep hold of John Souttar, insisting the midfielder wants to stay at Tannadice.
United confirmed on Monday that there would be no new deal offered to the 19-year-old, whose contract is up at the end of the season, after talks stalled between the club and the player’s representative.
Souttar has been strongly linked with Celtic, however, Paatelainen, whose side lies 11 points adrift at the bottom of the Scottish Premiership, hasn’t given up hope of retaining the young, exciting talent at the club.
“The contract was on the table for a long period, then nothing happened from the other side so it was taken off the table,” Paatelainen told the BBC.
“Talks are ongoing and the feeling from both parties is that John stays here.
“I trust we will come to a conclusion and John will stay here and develop here because I feel he is in good hands. He is a young player still and he plays every week. We want to keep him and John wants to stay here.”
