Saints catching Hearts

Tommy Wright believes St Johnstone’s top-six place is virtually assured – and now wants his side to switch their focus to catching Hearts.

The Perth outfit sit fifth with a nine-point cushion on seventh-placed Kilmarnock and seven over Partick Thistle in sixth.

That has left the Northern Irishman in confident mood as he eyes a remarkable sixth top-half finish in as many years.

And with Saints trailing fourth-placed Hearts by just a solitary point, Wright now wants to make sure his team keep pace with the Jambos when they travel to Motherwell on Saturday.

He said: “A couple of wins will definitely do it but you could argue we have enough points already to see us into the top six.

“Kilmarnock still have to play Thistle but would need to turn around nine points on ourselves and overturn the goal difference for us to worry about it.

“We’re just concentrating on trying to win the next game.

“We’re delighted with the performance we had at Dundee last weekend and are looking forward to continuing our good away record to make sure we stay in touch with Hearts as well as maintaining that gap we have on Partick.

“The type of performance we put in at home against Dundee is the type that wins you football matches, so we want more of that again.

“Motherwell are like a lot of the teams below us in that they are inconsistent. We’ve been too but have been able to string together a few better results.”
