Scottish Premiership preview: St. Johnstone

Tommy Wright’s men have done remarkably well given the size and stature of the squad to secure four successive European-placed finishes but it might just be beyond them to do it again this season.

Already out of Europe after being eliminated by Armenian side Alashkert it could well be a tough campaign ahead for the Saints. They struggled for goals last season after the departure of Stevie May and they’ll be hoping that John Sutton can replicate the form which saw him score over 20 goals for Motherwell in the 2013-14 season. Liam Craig returns to his former club after being released by Hibs, while young defender Brad McKay joins from Hearts.

Wright’s men are usually well drilled and well organised but are perhaps the lacking imagination and creative flair needed to break teams down and score goals to get them towards Europe again and could find themselves mixing in with the middle of the pack.
