Southgate joins the coaching casualties

Gareth Southgate has become the first major injury casualty of England’s World Cup campaign after dislocating his shoulder on Wednesday.

Here, Press Association Sport picks out three other members of a team’s backroom staff who have picked up unusual injuries:

Southgate’s injury seems relatively tame compared with another suffered by a member of the England dugout in the 2014 World Cup. Physio Gary Lewin dislocated his left ankle and fractured his fibula and tibula, and also ruptured some ligaments, while celebrating Daniel Sturridge’s equaliser against Italy. The Three Lions went on to lose 2-1 in a hugely disappointing campaign, and Southgate will be hoping his setback does not bring on a repeat.

Eddie Jones’ shiner after shower stumble

England head coach Eddie Jones is used to the rough and tumble of rugby union but a black eye as a result of a shower slip came as a surprise in January 2017. The Australian sported the shiner after a hotel room tumble while the Red Rose were at a training camp in Portugal. “I slipped over in the hotel in the morning,” Jones said to the media, who were shocked by his bandaged and bruised face. “My mother always told me I’ve got to shave and I forgot to shave, I walked out of the shower to get the shaver and this is what happened. I follow what my mother says.”

Joe Vitt’s wheelchair heroics

New Orleans Saints assistant coach Joe Vitt suffered a torn Achilles and a broken wrist while trying to chase down car burglars outside his house in 2015. The incident did little to prevent the then 61-year-old from attending the next game against the Indianapolis Colts. Vitt was pictured in a wheelchair on the touchline while the Saints stormed to a 27-21 victory. The game was even more extraordinary for being Vitt’s 600th as a coach in the NFL, and he was later helped onto the departing plane by players.
