After Barcelona’s tribute to the Johan Cruyff penalty against Celta Vigo, Lewis McKenzie takes a look at the five best penalties ever to have been scored.
Ajax Vs Helmond Sport, 5 December 1982
A three-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, Cruyff is one of the greatest to have ever played the game. During a career that saw him pick up an incredible number of club and individual honours, Cruyff is often also described as a visionary who has had a lasting legacy upon the way the game is played, with his expressive and unique style of play, creating the famous “Cruyff turn” and introducing Tiki-Taka football to Barcelona.
One of the most memorable moments of his career is the penalty he scored in a match for Ajax against Helmond Sport. Where most players would simply strike the ball from the spot, Cruyff wanted to do it differently. But then, Cruyff wasn’t like most other players. Instead, he placed the ball down onto the spot, passed the ball to his teammate Jesper Olsen, received the ball back, before passing the ball coolly into the open net. A real touch of class.
