The imposing figure of the ‘Great Dane’ was enough to fluster even the greatest of strikers when they narrowed their eyes on the target. It was difficult to pinpoint a weakness in the goalkeeper: he plucked crosses out of the sky, produced excellent reflex saves and was hugely influential. He was everything you could have wanted in a modern day goalkeeper.
