Warburton calls for protection of his players

Mark Warburton has called on referees to give better protection to his players after Rangers’ 1-0 Petrofac Training Cup quarter-final victory over Livingston.

Nathan Oduwa, on loan from Spurs, was on the receiving end of some strong challenges from Livi players particularly the one from Craig Gibbons after only 16 seconds, which could have merited a red card.

And another from Rui Faria (below).

Warburton believes those sort of fouls ruin the game as a spectacle and urged referees to do more to protect his players.

“There are many benefits up here for Nathan and he’s enjoying life in Glasgow and the club and we’re enjoying having him.

“It is frustrating watching the game and talented players do need some protection. I’m not saying special treatment, but look after them. Some of the tackles were inappropriate.

“We want games to be entertaining and for fans to enjoy it. Nathan’s one of those players who gets you off your seat. You pay your money to watch people like Nathan Oduwa. He was asking for some better protection.”
