Tommy Wright warns Saints to beware shock defeat to Stenny in Scottish Cup
St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright will take no chances when his side kick off their William Hill Scottish Cup bid against Stenhousemuir.
The 2014 winners are overwhelming favourites to see off Brown Ferguson’s part-timers when they visit Perth this Saturday.
But Wright will name a first-choice Saints line-up despite taking on a team who are second bottom of Ladbrokes League One.
The Northern Irishman has already seen a number of big names tumble out of the FA Cup in England this month and is worried his side could also suffer a shock if they do not take Stenny seriously.
He said: “I’ll be putting my strongest team out. I don’t think we – or any club for that matter – can take the competition lightly.
“It comes back to the phrase ‘respect for the opposition’.
“It doesn’t matter what Stenny have done previously this season. It doesn’t matter what we have done either. It’s a cup game and there is a list as long as your arm of big clubs down south who have been knocked out of the FA Cup. Look at Lincoln the other night.
“That’s the beauty of the cup – anything can happen on any given day.
“I’ve had them watched and went to watch them last week myself, so we know what to expect. We are the favourites, there’s no question about that, but we’re preparing as if we’re playing Aberdeen, Rangers, Celtic or Hearts.
“It’s all about us and how we turn up.
“We want to win games and this is the start of a new stage in the season for us.
“A cup victory sets you up nicely and gives you something to look forward to and gives the place a bit of a lift.”
