Club Brugge beat Lens 3-0 at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Wednesday night, and the timing of the goals tells most of the story. After a goalless first half, the match turned within five minutes of the restart, when Hans Vanaken and Joaquin Seys scored two minutes apart. Carlos Forbs added a third in the 72nd minute, and Lens never found a reply.
A goalless first half
For 45 minutes there was nothing between the sides on the scoreboard. Neither team turned the opening half into a lead, and at the interval this was still an open contest. That is worth keeping in mind when reading the final margin. A 3-0 scoreline can suggest one-way traffic from the first whistle, but this match was level at half-time. Everything that separated the teams came after the break.
Two goals in two minutes
Vanaken opened the scoring in the 48th minute, three minutes into the second half. Seys doubled the lead in the 50th. That short spell changed the evening.
A single early goal leaves an opponent plenty of time to respond. A second so soon afterwards changes the arithmetic considerably. Lens went from level to two goals down in barely a few minutes, with most of the half still to play but a far steeper task in front of them. Winning the second half was no longer enough for them. They now needed two goals simply to draw.
Forbs settles it
Between the 50th and 72nd minutes, Lens had more than 20 minutes at 2-0 to get back into the match, and they did not score. Forbs then made it three in the 72nd minute. That goal effectively ended the contest. With only the final 18 minutes and stoppage time remaining, Lens would have needed three goals to take anything from the night.
No further goals followed. Club Brugge saw out the remainder of the match without conceding.
What the result shows
A few points stand out.
- All three goals came in the second half. The first two arrived within five minutes of the restart, and the third midway through the half.
- Three different scorers. Vanaken, Seys and Forbs each scored once, so the goals were shared around rather than coming from one player.
- A clean sheet. Lens did not score at all, so the margin rested as much on Club Brugge keeping them out as on their own finishing.
Some caution is needed. A scoreline records when the goals came and who scored them, not how the match was played. It would be easy to read 3-0 as complete control, but a goalless first half argues against that. The fairer reading is that this was an even contest at the break, and Club Brugge then took it away from Lens with a decisive burst just after half-time.
What is beyond dispute is the result itself. On the third matchday of the Champions League, Club Brugge won 3-0 at home and conceded nothing.
