Coventry City beat Sunderland 3-1 at the CBS Arena on Saturday afternoon. Three goals in 35 minutes either side of half-time settled the Premier League Matchday 9 fixture well before the end. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni scored for the home side. Enzo Le Fée replied from the penalty spot, and Sunderland finished with ten men after Omar Alderete was sent off in the 90th minute.

How the goals came

Sakamoto opened the scoring in the 17th minute, and Awoniyi doubled the lead in the 37th. Coventry went in at the interval two goals to the good. A two-goal half-time lead is never a closed case, but Rudoni made it a good deal more secure seven minutes after the restart, scoring the third in the 52nd minute.

Sunderland's response came in the 67th minute, when Le Fée converted a penalty. That left them more than 20 minutes plus stoppage time to find two goals and rescue a point, but the scoring ended there. Alderete's dismissal, for a second yellow card, came in the 90th minute. It reduced Sunderland to ten men only for the closing stages and had no bearing on the scoreline.

The shape of the afternoon was clear enough from the timings alone. Coventry scored at regular intervals through the middle of the match and were never behind or level after the 17th minute. Sunderland's only goal came from the spot, with the game already at 3-0.

The recent meetings

The result fits a pattern in this fixture rather than breaking one. Before Saturday, the five most recent meetings read:

  • 23 December 2023: Sunderland 0-3 Coventry City
  • 9 November 2024: Sunderland 2-2 Coventry City
  • 15 March 2025: Coventry City 3-0 Sunderland
  • 9 May 2025: Coventry City 1-2 Sunderland
  • 13 May 2025: Sunderland 1-1 Coventry City

Taking those five games together with this one, Coventry have now won three, Sunderland one, and two have been drawn. Coventry have scored in all six. This is the third time in that run they have scored three. Their wins in this sequence have tended to be emphatic, with clean sheets in the two earlier victories. Sunderland's one win came at Coventry in May 2025, so Saturday's result reversed the outcome of the previous meeting on this ground.

There is a limit to how much weight that record can bear. Six matches spread across nearly three years is a modest sample, and the two sides met three times inside the space of two months in 2025. Those games were all close, and they produced a Sunderland win and two draws. It would be a stretch to call this a one-sided fixture on that basis. It is fair to say Coventry have generally found goals against Sunderland, and did so again here.

What the result shows

On the day, the margin was a fair reflection of how the scoring unfolded. Coventry led after 17 minutes, extended that lead twice and conceded only from a penalty. Sunderland were left chasing from early on and never got closer than two goals. It is one result, and it says more about this afternoon than about either side's season. But it was a convincing one for Coventry City.
