Diakité's early goal gives Sturm Graz victory over Marseille

Oumar Diakité scored after 13 minutes and Sturm Graz kept that lead to beat Marseille 1-0 in the Europa League on Matchday 3.

Sturm Graz beat Marseille 1-0 at the Liebenauer Stadium on Thursday evening. The only goal came from Oumar Diakité in the 13th minute, and it stood for the rest of the match. It was a Europa League win settled early and never undone.

The goal that decided it

Diakité's goal arrived less than a quarter of an hour in. In a match that finished with a single goal, that moment carried the whole result. Everything after it was a question of whether Marseille could find a reply, and the answer was that they could not.

An early goal changes the shape of a contest. The side in front no longer needs to force anything, and the side behind has the rest of the game to chase. Marseille had more than 75 minutes to draw level and did not manage it. However that time was spent, the outcome was the same: Sturm Graz's lead held to the end.

A clean sheet and a narrow margin

The scoreline carries two separate points. The first is that Sturm Graz kept Marseille out entirely. Whatever Marseille attempted over the evening, none of it produced a goal, and a clean sheet against opposition of that standing is something any side would value.

The second is that the margin was as narrow as it gets. One goal separated the teams, scored early, with nothing added at either end afterwards. Matches decided like that can turn on very small things, and a single moment could easily have changed the result. It is fair to credit Sturm Graz with the win without reading the result as a show of superiority. A 1-0 tells you who won and when the decisive moment came. It does not, by itself, tell you how the rest of the evening went.

What the result does and does not show

For Sturm Graz, this was a home win on Matchday 3, and those are worth having whatever the circumstances. Their scorer will take the headlines, and rightly so, because without his goal there was nothing else on the scoresheet to separate the sides.

For Marseille, the result is a defeat in which they did not score. That is the plain summary. One match is not a pattern, though, and there is little point drawing wider conclusions about either side from a single narrow result. A one-goal defeat away from home can come from many different kinds of performance.

The honest assessment is a limited one. Sturm Graz scored once, early, and did not concede. Marseille did not find a way back. Diakité's 13th-minute goal was the difference, and on a night with only one goal in it, that was enough.
