Galatasaray recover to win 4-2 at Lille despite Diaoune double

Galatasaray came from behind at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, scoring three unanswered goals after Soriba Diaoune's double had put Lille ahead on Champions League Matchday 3.

Galatasaray won 4-2 at Lille on Wednesday, and the shape of the evening was set by a 17-minute spell either side of half-time. Lille had turned an early deficit into a lead through two goals from Soriba Diaoune. They held it for five minutes. From the 44th minute to the 61st, Galatasaray scored three times without reply, and that was the match.

A fast start from both sides

The visitors were ahead inside two minutes through Yunus Akgün, the kind of opening that can unsettle a home side for some time. Lille needed only five minutes to answer it. Diaoune equalised in the seventh minute, and with two goals inside the first ten the game had an open feel early on.

The scoring then paused for more than half an hour. When it resumed, it went Lille's way. Diaoune struck again in the 39th minute to make it 2-1. A lead taken so close to the interval is often the most valuable kind, because it gives the side in front the break to regroup. Lille did not get to use it.

Batrakov's timing changed the evening

Aleksey Batrakov levelled for Galatasaray in the 44th minute, five minutes after Diaoune's second. In scoreline terms it only restored parity. In practical terms it took away the platform Lille had just built and sent the sides in at 2-2 with the momentum having swung back to the visitors.

That reading is borne out by what followed. Lucas Torreira put Galatasaray in front in the 52nd minute, seven minutes after the restart, and Victor Osimhen made it 4-2 in the 61st. Three goals in 17 minutes, spread across the interval, turned a one-goal deficit into a two-goal advantage.

A quiet final half-hour

After the frenzy of the first hour, there were no further goals. Galatasaray's two-goal cushion was never reduced, and the last half-hour of the match produced nothing to change the result. For a game that had six goals by the 61st minute, that is a notable contrast, though the scoreline alone cannot tell us whether it reflected control from the visitors or a contest that simply ran out of incision.

What the result shows

The individual honours were split. Diaoune was the only player on the night to score twice, and finishing on the losing side does not diminish a double in a Champions League fixture. Galatasaray, by contrast, spread their goals across four different scorers in Akgün, Batrakov, Torreira and Osimhen, which speaks to threat coming from more than one place.

The broader lesson is about resilience over the course of the match. Galatasaray went ahead, fell behind, and responded each time. Lille scored twice in reply to an early setback but could not do the same once the game turned against them after half-time.

One result on the third matchday is not enough to draw firm conclusions about either side's campaign. What it does establish is that Galatasaray left the Stade Pierre-Mauroy having recovered from a deficit on the road to win by two, and that Lille, for all Diaoune's work, conceded four at home.
