González strikes late as Olympiacos edge Sparta Praha

Armando González scored the only goal in the 78th minute as Olympiacos beat Sparta Praha 1-0 in the Europa League at the Karaiskaki Stadium.

Armando González scored the only goal at the Karaiskaki Stadium on Thursday night, finding the net in the 78th minute to give Olympiacos a 1-0 win over Sparta Praha on Matchday 3 of the Europa League.

It was a result settled late and by the narrowest margin a football match allows. For more than three quarters of the evening the scoreline did not move, and when it finally did, it was the home side who found the difference.

The decisive goal

González's goal arrived with twelve minutes of normal time remaining. Until then neither side had found a way through, and the game had stayed goalless for 77 minutes. A single goal at that stage leaves the other side little time to respond, and so it proved. Sparta Praha did not reply, and González's strike stood as the winner.

As the only goal of the night, it makes him the sole name on the scoresheet. In a match decided this narrowly, one moment carried the whole result.

What the scoreline shows

A 1-0 home win establishes two plain facts. Olympiacos kept a clean sheet, holding Sparta Praha scoreless across the full match, and they produced the one goal the game required. Either half of that would have been worth something on its own. Together they were enough to win.

For Sparta Praha the reading runs the other way. They finished without a goal and without a result, beaten by a single strike in the closing stages of the second half. Having kept the score level for so long, they will reflect on how little separated them from a draw.

The limits of a one-goal margin

It is worth being careful about how much to draw from this. A one-goal game turns on fine details, and the scoreline alone does not reveal whether Olympiacos were comfortable or fortunate, or whether Sparta Praha deserved more than they took. A late winner can follow a long period of control or come against the run of play. The result reads the same either way.

What can be said is that the match was level on the scoreboard for most of its length, so on that measure at least, little divided the sides until the 78th minute. Nor does one result say much about either club's wider campaign. It is a single game in a competition of several, and it should be weighed as one.

The verdict

Olympiacos won because they scored and Sparta Praha did not. That is a modest summary, but it is an accurate one. González supplied the goal, the home defence held out for the full match, and a tight Europa League evening went the way of the side playing at the Karaiskaki Stadium.

For Sparta Praha, the margin was as small as it gets. It was still a defeat.
