Isco penalty gives Betis narrow win over Feyenoord
Isco's 59th-minute penalty settled a tight Champions League tie in Seville, giving Betis a second one-goal win over Feyenoord this year.
By Harvey Watkins,
Betis beat Feyenoord 1-0 at the Estadio de La Cartuja on Wednesday evening. Isco's penalty in the 59th minute was the only goal of their Champions League matchday 3 meeting.
The decisive moment
The match was goalless at half-time and stayed that way until just before the hour. When Betis were awarded a penalty, Isco converted it, and that was the scoring done for the night. Feyenoord had a little over half an hour to respond and could not find an equaliser. Betis saw the game out.
It is worth being precise about what the scoreline does and does not tell us. Neither side scored from open play, and the one goal came from the spot. A 1-0 win settled by a penalty shows that the margins were fine. On its own, it does not show which side had the better of the contest for long stretches, and it would be overreaching to claim more than that.
What can be said is that Betis kept a clean sheet. In a match decided by a single kick, that was exactly what the win required. Isco supplied the goal and the defence made sure it was enough.
A second narrow win over Feyenoord
This was the second meeting between the clubs in 2026. Betis won 2-1 in January, so across the two games they have now beaten Feyenoord twice, scoring three goals and conceding one. Both wins came by a single goal.
That is a consistent pattern, but a short one. Two matches nine months apart are a small sample, and it would be a stretch to call this a hold over the Dutch side. The more measured reading is that these have been close games which Betis have edged both times. Neither result suggests one team has been clearly superior to the other.
For Feyenoord, the record is more pointed in one respect. They have scored once in two meetings with Betis, and on Wednesday they did not score at all. Whatever else the two results show, goals have been hard for them to come by in this fixture.
What the result amounts to
A home win in the Champions League counts the same however it is earned, and Betis have three more points from this one. The manner was unspectacular. One goal, from the spot, protected for the final half hour. That is a perfectly legitimate way to win a football match, and it is the second time this year it has worked for them against this opponent.
For Feyenoord, the takeaway is simpler and less comfortable. They lost a match decided by a single penalty, and they did not score. A one-goal defeat away from home is not a heavy one, but it leaves them with nothing to show from the night.
Little more can fairly be drawn from a single 1-0. The result was narrow, it was settled by Isco from twelve yards, and it went the way of the side that has now won both recent meetings between these clubs.
