Late double seals 3-0 Anderlecht win at Jagiellonia Białystok

Cvetković opened the scoring before Winkler and Onia Seke struck eight minutes apart to give Anderlecht a 3-0 Europa League win in Białystok.

Anderlecht won 3-0 at the Chorten Arena on Thursday night, beating Jagiellonia Białystok on Matchday 3 of the Europa League. Mihajlo Cvetković scored in the first half. Marten Winkler and Jayden Onia Seke added second-half goals eight minutes apart to put the result beyond doubt.

The scoreline leaves little room for argument about the outcome, though it says rather less about how the evening unfolded. What the timing of the goals does show is a match that stayed finely poised for a long time before turning sharply in the final 20 minutes.

Cvetković's first-half opener

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute, when Cvetković put Anderlecht ahead. It was the only goal of the first half, so the visitors went in at the interval with a one-goal lead.

An early goal away from home is valuable, but a single goal is also the narrowest of advantages. At half-time the match was still very much open, with Jagiellonia Białystok one goal from level terms.

A long spell at 1-0

Fifty-one minutes passed between the first goal and the second. That stretch covered the rest of the first half and the opening 26 minutes of the second, and throughout it the margin stayed at one. For all of that time a draw remained a live possibility.

That Jagiellonia never found the equaliser is the central fact of their night. They finished without a goal. Whatever chances they had to change the course of the match, none were taken, and a one-goal deficit eventually became something much harder to recover.

Two goals in eight minutes

Winkler doubled Anderlecht's lead in the 72nd minute, and the complexion of the evening changed with it. A two-goal cushion with under 20 minutes left is a different proposition from a single goal, and it left the home side needing two just to draw.

Onia Seke then made it 3-0 in the 80th minute. In the space of eight minutes a close contest on the scoreboard had become a comfortable margin. The closing ten minutes were played with the outcome settled.

Three different players got on the scoresheet, which spreads the credit across the side rather than resting it on one name. Cvetković's goal set the terms of the match. The later pair from Winkler and Onia Seke made sure there was no late twist.

Reading the result

A three-goal win away from home in European competition, with a clean sheet, is a strong result by any measure. Anderlecht scored early, held their lead through a long period when it was vulnerable, and then pulled clear.

The scoreline alone cannot say whether the late goals came from sustained pressure finally telling or from a match opening up as it went on. A 3-0 result can flatter or understate either side, and one evening is a thin basis for broad conclusions.

For Jagiellonia Białystok, the 72nd minute was the turning point. Until then the match was there to be drawn. After it, the evening slipped away quickly. For Anderlecht, it was a night when the goals came at the right moments, and they left Białystok with the win.
