Matt McGlone on his night in Kiev and his Celtic dream team
The Celts for Change man picks his Celtic dream team and retells a story from his book about Dynamo Kiev in 1986, a black car and a long wait in a car park.
By PLZ Soccer,
On The Football Show, Matt McGlone of Celts for Change looked back at a night in Kiev in 1986. The segment, first published on Straight Talk with Peter Martin in September 2026, centres on a line that sums up the trip: "Kidnapped by the KGB".
The dream team
The conversation opens with McGlone picking his Celtic dream team. He starts with the Lisbon Lions and adds Kenny, King Henrik, Danny McGrain and Artur Boruc.
Dynamo Kiev, 1986
From there he turns to a story from his book, Emotionally Celtic. The setting is Dynamo Kiev in 1986, and the trouble began with a street curfew that nobody had told McGlone and his company about.
What followed involved a black car, the instruction "Get in" and a man with a minder. McGlone also recalls spending two and a half hours in the car park with Ken McCluskey of The Bluebells.
The story also takes in Christopher White's interview for the team plane and the words "Matt, please come back". It ends with a pie, a bridie and a bottle of whisky.
How he wants to be remembered
McGlone finishes by saying how he would like to be remembered: "just as a Celtic fan that cared".
The segment pairs a supporter's choice of the club's greatest players with one of the stranger away trips in a Celtic fan's memory. It closes on a plain statement of what the club means to him.
