Newcastle host Everton four days after a 3-1 defeat

Everton beat Newcastle 3-1 on 29 October. We look at both sides' form and the recent head-to-head ahead of Monday's rematch at St. James' Park.

By Harvey Watkins,

Newcastle and Everton meet for the second time in five days. On 29 October Everton won 3-1 on their own ground, and on Monday evening the fixture is reversed at St. James' Park in Matchday 9 of the Premier League. Previews rarely have evidence this fresh to work from, and that evidence puts the onus on Newcastle.

The meeting four days ago

Everton's 3-1 win was the most productive attacking display either side has managed lately. It accounted for half of Everton's six goals across their last five matches, and it followed two games without scoring, against Arsenal and Chelsea. For Newcastle it ended a brief recovery. They had won 2-0 at Crystal Palace four days earlier, their only clean sheet in that run.

One result is only one result, and a single match can flatter a side. Everton had looked short of goals until that night. But it is also the most current reading of how these two teams compare, and it points in one direction.

Newcastle's form

Newcastle have won two and lost three of their last five, scoring six and conceding nine. The 4-1 defeat at Coventry City accounts for a good share of that goals-against column. Leave it aside and they have conceded five in four, which is less alarming but still not the record of a side keeping teams out.

Their home results in that spell are split: a 2-1 win over Hull City and a 0-1 defeat to Aston Villa. The more encouraging detail is that they have scored in four of their five matches, failing only against Villa.

Everton's form

Everton have two wins, a draw and two defeats from their last five, with six scored and seven conceded. Both wins came at home, 1-0 against Ipswich Town and the 3-1 against Newcastle. Away from home in this run they lost 2-0 at Arsenal and drew 2-2 at Hull City.

Hull are the one common opponent. Newcastle beat them 2-1 at home, Everton drew with them away. It is a thin comparison and should not carry much weight.

Recent meetings

Across the five most recent meetings Everton have won three, Newcastle one, and one was drawn. The detail that stands out concerns this venue. Both of Everton's visits to St. James' Park in that sequence ended in away wins, 1-0 in May 2025 and 3-2 in February 2026.

Newcastle's one win came on the road, a 4-1 at Everton in November 2025. The last three meetings have produced 14 goals between them, while the two before that produced one.

  • 29 Oct 2026: Everton 3-1 Newcastle
  • 28 Feb 2026: Newcastle 2-3 Everton
  • 29 Nov 2025: Everton 1-4 Newcastle
  • 25 May 2025: Newcastle 0-1 Everton
  • 5 Oct 2024: Everton 0-0 Newcastle

The view

On recent evidence Everton have the stronger claim. They won convincingly four days ago and have won on their last two trips to this ground. Newcastle's own form, three defeats in five, gives little reason to overturn that.

Even so, the case is not overwhelming. Everton's away results in this run amount to a defeat and a draw, and their scoring has been uneven. Newcastle have generally found the net, and they won at Everton less than a year ago. My view is that Everton are the more likely winners, with a draw well within reach. Short runs like these can turn quickly, and a home win would not be a surprise.
