Nicolas Jackson double gives Aston Villa 2-1 win over Man City
Jackson scored either side of an Erling Haaland equaliser as Aston Villa beat Man City again at Villa Park, extending a run against them that is now hard to dismiss.
By Harvey Watkins,
Aston Villa beat Man City 2-1 at Villa Park on Matchday 8 of the Premier League, with Nicolas Jackson scoring both goals. Erling Haaland's equaliser early in the second half drew City level, but it lasted eight minutes before Jackson restored the lead.
The result matters less as a single scoreline than as the latest entry in a sequence. Villa have now won four of the last five meetings between the clubs, and three in a row.
How the goals came
Jackson opened the scoring in the sixth minute, giving Villa a lead they carried through to half-time. A goal that early hands a side the whole match to protect it, and Villa did not concede before the interval.
Haaland levelled in the 52nd minute, and at that point the game had reset. Villa answered quickly. Jackson's second arrived on the hour, and it proved to be the winner. Nothing further was scored in the final half-hour, so Villa saw out a one-goal advantage for the last 30 minutes.
For Jackson, a brace against City is a significant afternoon's work. Both of Villa's goals were his, which made him the difference on the day in the plainest sense.
A pattern in the recent meetings
Taken on its own, a home win over Man City could be read as an upset. Set against the recent record, it looks more like a continuation. The last six meetings ran as follows:
- 24 Oct 2026: Aston Villa 2-1 Man City
- 24 May 2026: Man City 1-2 Aston Villa
- 26 Oct 2025: Aston Villa 1-0 Man City
- 22 Apr 2025: Man City 2-1 Aston Villa
- 21 Dec 2024: Aston Villa 2-1 Man City
- 3 Apr 2024: Man City 4-1 Aston Villa
Two things stand out. The first is that Villa have won each of the last three of these meetings played at Villa Park. The second is how tight the games have been. Five of those six matches were settled by a single goal, and the only comfortable margin was City's 4-1 win in April 2024. Since then, neither side has won by more than one.
That should temper any temptation to read this as dominance. Villa have been on the right side of narrow games far more often than not, but narrow is the word. City's last win in the fixture, in April 2025, was by the same 2-1 scoreline Villa have repeatedly managed, and a single goal has separated the sides almost every time.
What it tells us
It is early in the season, and one result on Matchday 8 says little about where either club will finish. What it does reinforce is that this has become a fixture Villa approach with a strong recent record behind them, particularly at home.
City were not outclassed on the scoreline. They found an equaliser and were level for a spell in the second half. But for the third meeting running they left with nothing, and on this occasion it was Jackson who made sure of it.
