Rice earns Arsenal a 2-2 draw with Bayern in Munich

Declan Rice's 82nd-minute goal cancelled out Harry Kane's penalty as Bayern and Arsenal drew 2-2 at the Allianz Arena on Champions League Matchday 3.

By Harvey Watkins,

Bayern and Arsenal shared four goals and a point each at the Allianz Arena, with Declan Rice scoring eight minutes from the end of normal time to draw the visitors level for a second time. Each side held the lead once. Neither could keep it.

How the goals came

Arsenal struck first. Eberechi Eze scored in the 25th minute to give the away side an early advantage in Munich.

It lasted ten minutes. Alphonso Davies equalised for Bayern in the 35th minute, and the sides went in level at the interval.

Bayern went ahead just past the hour. Harry Kane scored from the penalty spot in the 61st minute to make it 2-1, and with home advantage behind them, Bayern had the stronger hand at that point.

Arsenal were behind for 21 minutes before Declan Rice found the equaliser in the 82nd minute. There was no further scoring.

What the scoreline says

The shape of the scoring tells a fair story of a match that never belonged to one side for long. Arsenal's opener was answered quickly, and Bayern's lead from the penalty spot was answered late. Both teams showed they could respond after conceding, which is about as much as a scoreline alone can show.

For Arsenal, coming from behind away from home to take a point in Munich is a respectable return. For Bayern, the draw will read as a lead that slipped, given they were in front with less than half an hour to play. Both readings are reasonable, and neither is the whole picture.

The recent record between the clubs

The result keeps this fixture finely balanced. Across the four most recent meetings, including this one, each side has won once and two matches have been drawn, both of them 2-2.

  • 21 Oct 2026: Bayern 2-2 Arsenal
  • 26 Nov 2025: Arsenal 3-1 Bayern
  • 17 Apr 2024: Bayern 1-0 Arsenal
  • 9 Apr 2024: Arsenal 2-2 Bayern

Arsenal are now unbeaten in the last two meetings, following last November's 3-1 win in London with a draw in Munich. Bayern's only win in that run was the 1-0 at home in April 2024, which remains their most recent victory over Arsenal.

There is a pattern of sorts in the goals. Three of the four meetings have produced at least three goals, and both sides have scored in three of them. The exception was Bayern's narrow home win in 2024. Four matches over two and a half years is a short record, though, and it would be stretching it to read much into it beyond the obvious: these two sides have been closely matched when they have met.

Where it leaves things

Matchday 3 ends with honours even and nothing settled between two clubs whose recent meetings have rarely been one-sided. On this evidence, any future encounter looks just as hard to call as this one proved to be.
