Suzuki own goal earns Fulham a draw at Villa Park

Nicolas Jackson gave Aston Villa the lead before an own goal levelled it, with a look at how the draw fits a recent run of meetings Villa had largely controlled.

Aston Villa and Fulham shared the points at Villa Park on Saturday evening, drawing 1-1 on Matchday 9 of the Premier League. Both goals were scored by Villa players. Nicolas Jackson put the home side ahead in the 39th minute, and an own goal from Zion Suzuki in the 64th brought Fulham level.

How the scoring unfolded

Jackson's goal arrived six minutes before half-time and gave Villa a lead to take into the interval. It lasted until midway through the second half, when Suzuki's own goal cancelled it out. With just over 25 minutes still to play, neither side found a winner.

The scoresheet is unusual for a draw. Fulham took a point without a goal credited to one of their own players. That is a statement about the record rather than a verdict on the evening. An own goal counts the same as any other, and a single scoreline cannot say how the rest of the match went.

A break in the recent pattern

The draw stands out against the recent history of this fixture. Before Saturday, Villa had won four of the five most recent meetings:

  • 17 Feb 2024: Fulham 1-2 Aston Villa
  • 19 Oct 2024: Fulham 1-3 Aston Villa
  • 3 May 2025: Aston Villa 1-0 Fulham
  • 28 Sep 2025: Aston Villa 3-1 Fulham
  • 25 Apr 2026: Fulham 1-0 Aston Villa

Fulham's 1-0 win in April ended a sequence of four straight Villa victories. Saturday's result means Fulham have now gone two meetings without defeat. It is also the first draw between the clubs across the six most recent meetings.

Villa Park had been a reliable venue for the home side. Villa won both of their previous home meetings in that run, scoring four and conceding one. Fulham left with something there for the first time in that sequence, although they needed an own goal to do it.

Narrow margins

Recent meetings have generally been tight. Four of the last six have finished level or been decided by a single goal. Only the two 3-1 Villa wins, one at Craven Cottage and one at Villa Park, opened up a wider gap. Saturday's two goals made this one of the lower-scoring meetings in the run, alongside the two 1-0 results.

Taken together, the six most recent meetings read four Villa wins, one Fulham win and one draw. That still favours Villa clearly. However, the last two results suggest the gap has narrowed, at least in this fixture. Two matches is a small sample, and it would be a stretch to call it a shift. Even so, a fixture that once seemed to run one way has become harder to call.

For Villa, the evening produced a goal from Jackson and a lead they could not keep. For Fulham, it extended a modest run of avoiding defeat against these opponents. Neither result is enough on its own to change the wider picture.
