A year unbeaten in league

When Rangers lost at home to Hamilton Accies exactly a year ago to fall 13 points behind Celtic, I firmly believe that Steven Gerrard was thinking about chucking it.

That horrendous result came on the back of Rangers being humbled in the Scottish Cup by a desperately poor Hearts side at Tynecastle.

Gerrard spoke after that game about ‘having to have a good think’ about his future.

All this was on the back of Rangers skipper James Tavernier saying in his programme notes that his side couldn’t handle the pressure of the supporters demands.

He subsequently got slaughtered by the punters and everyone at Ibrox was under severe pressure.

Then of course as we all know this dreadful virus Covid 19 struck and the whole world was put on hold.

This was the major turning point I believe for Steven Gerrard and Rangers.

They were able to go away and lick their wounds away from the spotlight and without having to go through further pain.

I do think that the manager would have walked if that poor form had continued.

With the ending of the league prematurely and subsequent chaos in terms of Neil Doncaster and the voting debacle, it seemed to create a real siege mentality at Ibrox among the club and the fans.

They felt wronged and boy have they hit back with a vengeance.

When Rangers came back they were a completely different side. They and the manager seemed completely mentally refreshed.

They played with a freedom that was missing from before lockdown. It was as if they played every game as their last.

Rangers started the season in flying form and never looked back. They now have not lost a league game since that night v Accies at Ibrox to sit miles clear of Celtic.

It has been done with a style of play that has been immense to watch both domestically and in Europe.

It seems that the nightmare run Rangers were on just before covid struck is a lifetime away.

To go a full year unbeaten in the league is a fantastic achievement for Rangers and they deservedly will go on and win the league and stop the ten.

It’s amazing how long a year is in football.
