GIOVANNI TRAPATTONI

The Italian defensive midfielder certainly had his work cut out when he was asked to man-mark the great Eusebio in Milan’s 2-1 win over Benfica in the European Cup final in 1963. Eusebio opened the scoring but Trapattoni managed to nullify the threat of the “Black Panther” to such an extent that he was unable to inflict further damage on the Rossoneri thereafter. Trapattoni said of Eusebio: “He was much faster than me and scored an amazing goal, and I realized that it was impossible to stop Eusebio.” Trapattoni was to win the Cup once more when Milan emphatically beat Ajax 4-1 in 1969. As a manager he guided Juventus to European Cup success in 1985 with a 1-0 win over Liverpool.
