Wright: We deserved to beat Celtic PLZ Soccer
By Craig Turnbull

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright believes his side thoroughly merited their victory over Celtic at Parkhead and revealed that Danny Swanson, whose wonder strike sealed the points, was a doubt before the game.

Swanson’s wonderful half-volley was the difference on the night St Johnstone boosted their chances of a top-six finish and Celtic missed the opportunity to go nine points clear at the top.

And Wright was full of praise for his side for their effort and endeavour throughout the 90 minutes.

“We asked them to be brave in posssession and they were. When you come here you have to keep the ball, and we did that. That gave us a platform to go and win it,” he said.

“We talked about having the balance not to be on the back foot all the time and to do that you have to keep the ball, and we did that particularly well, and we got a great goal. I can’t remember many clear-cut chances.

“There were a lot of chances and shots from outside the box which Alan has dealt well, but overall no-one can suggest we didn’t deserve the victory.”

Wright added that goal hero Swanson might have not even made the trip to Celtic Park.

“He was not feeling well this morning and he was doubtful for the game,” Wright continued.

“He has been unfortunate since he came in because he had only really played one game in a month before and picked up a wee injury after Queen of the South.

“We have been working hard on getting him match-fit. He is a quality footballer. He is very good technically and it’s a tremendous finish.”
