By Harvey Watkins,

Falkirk won 1-0 at Pittodrie on Wednesday night. Ben Krauhaus scored the only goal of the game in the 73rd minute, settling a Scottish Premiership fixture that had stayed goalless for almost three quarters of its length.

The result rested on two things: a single finish and a clean sheet. Either could be called decisive, but Falkirk needed both to leave Aberdeen with nothing from their home fixture on MatchDay 11.

The goal

Krauhaus struck with 17 minutes of normal time remaining. Until then the scoreline had offered neither side anything to hold on to, and a game that stays level for that long tends to turn on whichever moment arrives first. This one fell to Falkirk.

From there the task for each side became simple to state. Aberdeen, at home and behind, needed a goal. Falkirk needed to avoid conceding one. The final score shows which of those was achieved. Aberdeen did not find a reply, and the 1-0 stood to the end.

What the result says

A 1-0 win is the narrowest margin there is, and it is worth being careful about how much weight one result of that kind can carry. A single goal separated the sides, and it came late enough that the match was level for most of its duration. It would be a stretch to read a gulf between the clubs into it.

What it does show is that Falkirk kept Aberdeen out for the full match at Pittodrie. For a home side, failing to score across 90 minutes is the more telling part of the night. A clean sheet away from home is something visiting teams build results on, and Falkirk did exactly that.

For Aberdeen, the problem was the inverse. Nothing went into the opposition net, which left them no margin at all. One concession was enough to decide it.

Reading it in context

This is one result, and one result is thin evidence. Without the wider run of form either side brought into the game, it is not possible to say whether this was a surprise, a continuation or a correction. A single evening should not be stretched into a trend in either direction.

The fair summary is a simple one. Falkirk came to Pittodrie for a midweek fixture, scored once and conceded nothing. Aberdeen scored nothing and conceded once. In a match this tight, that was the whole difference.
