Braga and Miller give Hearts 2-0 win at Fir Park
Cláudio Braga and Calvin Miller scored as Hearts beat Motherwell 2-0 at Fir Park on MatchDay 10 of the Scottish Premiership.
By Harvey Watkins,
Hearts left Fir Park with a 2-0 win over Motherwell on Sunday afternoon. Cláudio Braga scored in the 29th minute and Calvin Miller added the second four minutes from time. The result rested on a first-half lead and a clean sheet, and it came on MatchDay 10 of the Scottish Premiership.
Braga's opener before the half-hour
The first goal arrived just before the half-hour. Braga's strike in the 29th minute put the visitors ahead, and it was the only goal of the first half. Taking the lead away from home with an hour still to play is useful rather than decisive. It gives a side something to protect, but it also leaves the hosts plenty of time to respond.
A long stretch at 1-0
That stretch shaped the result. Between Braga's goal and Miller's, the score sat at 1-0 for 57 minutes, and Motherwell did not find an equaliser. A single-goal lead is the most fragile kind, and Hearts held theirs for close to an hour.
For Motherwell, the more pointed number is the zero. They played the full 90 minutes at home without scoring, and the longer the game stayed at 1-0, the more each passing minute counted against them. One goal would have changed the complexion of the afternoon entirely. It never came.
Miller's late goal settles it
Miller's goal in the 86th minute removed the doubt. A two-goal lead with four minutes of normal time left is a different proposition from a one-goal lead, and it meant the closing stages carried far less risk for Hearts. Late goals of that kind are often described as insurance, and this one was exactly that. It turned a narrow win into a more comfortable scoreline.
It is worth being careful about how much a 2-0 result says. The scoreline alone does not reveal how the game was played, and because the second goal came so late, this was a one-goal contest for most of the afternoon. Read that way, the match was closer for longer than the final margin suggests, even if Motherwell never drew level.
What the result means
For Hearts, an away win and a clean sheet make for the most straightforward kind of good afternoon: two different scorers, nothing conceded and a win from a trip to Fir Park. For Motherwell, it was a home defeat without a goal, which is the outcome that leaves the least to build on.
One match is a small sample, and ten rounds into the season a single result should not be over-read in either direction. What can be said is that Hearts took their chance before the break, protected it for almost an hour and then finished the job late. Motherwell's afternoon ended without the goal that might have changed it.
