Celtic board accused of "gross negligence" over transfer strategy

On The Football Show, Celtic fan Matt McGlone criticised the club's board over its handling of the transfer market following another European exit. Supporter frustration with the boardroom, and with Dermot Desmond, came to the fore.

The verdict on Celtic's transfer strategy was blunt: "gross negligence at boardroom level".

McGlone argued that the Celtic board have been too slow in the transfer market. He set that against the club's record in recent European qualifying ties.

A recurring pattern

For McGlone, the problem is not a one-off. He believes the pattern of late signings has been a recurring strategy at the club, dating back to when Martin O'Neill was told to "rein it in".

That is the heart of his argument. In his view, the late business in each window is a deliberate approach rather than bad luck or poor timing, and it has been repeated over a long period.

No change coming

McGlone also said that last year's AGM confirmed the strategy would not change. On his reading, supporters who want the board to move earlier and more decisively in the market have already been given their answer.

His comments place responsibility for the latest European disappointment at boardroom level, and with a policy he says the club has chosen to keep.
